Introduction
The Playstation 2 turns 20 this year. The console was home to a number
of classic games. New franchises such as God of War, Devil May Cry, Ratchet and
Clank, Kingdom Hearts and Guitar Hero were born here. The likes of Grand Theft
Auto, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil reinvented themselves here, and it’s also
home to iconic standalone games such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Bully
(or Canis Canem Edit here in the UK, which isn’t nearly as catchy, but at least
it got the Daily Mail to back off for a bit.) These games, among thousands
more, are some of the reasons why the PS2 became the biggest selling games
console in history, with 155 million units sold worldwide, and retains that
title to this day.
Since the console celebrates its 20th anniversary this year,
so does the Official Playstation 2 Magazine, which was published monthly
alongside the console, and offered news, reviews and playable demos throughout
its 8 year lifespan. As I have recently acquired a complete collection of all 100
issues and demo discs, I thought I would commemorate the milestone with a
retrospective blog of each issue, inspired by this similar blog for the original PS1 incarnation of the Official Playstation Magazine. I hope the
author doesn’t mind me copying their idea!
Without further ado, let’s begin our journey back to the Third Place.
I’d love to have you join me…
